About Auburn Hills, Michigan
Auburn Hills is Detroit's northern engine room, a 100% urban Oakland County city that packs the Stellantis (Chrysler) North American headquarters, more than 50 automotive corporations, Oakland University, and Michigan's largest outlet mall into 17 square miles. For three decades it was basketball's address in Michigan, home of the Detroit Pistons at the privately built Palace of Auburn Hills and the site of the infamous 2004 'Malice at the Palace.' Settled in 1821 as the village of Auburn, it did not even carry the name 'Auburn Hills' until 1964.
History of Auburn Hills
- Aaron Webster became the first settler in 1821, founding the village of Auburn on the Clinton River and naming it after Auburn, New York; his sawmill and grist mill drew settlers and by 1826 Auburn rivaled nearby Pontiac.
- The town was renamed Amy in 1880 and became Auburn Heights in 1919.
- Automobile pioneer John Dodge bought a nearby farmhouse in 1908 and eventually amassed about 1,400 acres.
