About Clarkston, Michigan
Clarkston is a tiny, National-Register historic village in northern Oakland County that packs Victorian storefronts, a millpond, and a walkable Main Street into just 0.44 square miles, making it the smallest city by land area in the entire state. Founded around 1830s grist and saw mills, its formal name is the wonderfully redundant 'City of the Village of Clarkston.' Just outside its borders sits Pine Knob Music Theatre, one of the busiest outdoor amphitheaters in the country, so a village of under 1,000 people shares its name with a stage that draws millions.
History of Clarkston
- A New York squatter named Linus (Linux) Jacox built the first house/shanty in the area around 1830; Butler Holcomb built the second house and a sawmill in 1832.
- The Independence post office was transferred to the community on December 12, 1840.
- In 1842 brothers Jeremiah and Nelson Clark platted the village and gave it the name Clarkston.
