About Dearborn, Michigan
Dearborn is the birthplace of Henry Ford and the beating heart of Ford Motor Company, home to the sprawling River Rouge complex and the corporate world headquarters known as the Glass House. It is also the epicenter of Arab America: in 2023 it became the first Arab-majority city in the United States, and its Warren Avenue corridor is lined with Lebanese, Yemeni, and Iraqi bakeries, mosques, and shawarma spots. History and cars and halal cuisine all share the same streets in this Wayne County suburb of roughly 110,000 people.
History of Dearborn
- Named after Revolutionary War general Henry Dearborn (a former U.S. Secretary of War), the area began as a stagecoach stop on the Sauk Trail between Detroit and Chicago; the early settlement was originally called Springwells (anglicized from the French for the natural springs there).
Landmarks and Places in Dearborn
- The Henry Ford, a museum campus billed as the largest indoor-outdoor history museum complex in the U.S., includes the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation and open-air Greenfield Village.
The Dearborn Economy
- Cleveland-Cliffs runs the Dearborn Works integrated steel mill on the Rouge site, a legacy of Ford's original vertically integrated steelmaking.
Community Life in Dearborn
- Al Ameer, a Lebanese restaurant on Warren Avenue that opened in 1989, won a James Beard Foundation "America's Classics" award in 2016; the surrounding stretch is a national destination for Middle Eastern food.
- The city is a national hub for shawarma, Yemeni haneeth (slow-roasted lamb), fresh pita, and halal cuisine, and shawarma is now counted among metro Detroit's iconic dishes.
