• The Industrial Development Company established the community in 1923 and chose the name to attract lot buyers from Detroit to waterfront property, a naming recorded in Walter Romig's Michigan Place Names from Wayne State University Press. Schooling arrived through consolidation: Jefferson Schools was formed in the summer of 1947 when seven small independent districts merged, with a temporary building put up straight away for middle grade students and a new elementary school built on Hurd Road in 1955.
