About Howell, Michigan

Howell is the county seat of Livingston County, anchored by a landmark 1890 Richardsonian Romanesque courthouse at the center of a well-preserved historic downtown. It is best known statewide for the Howell melon, a local cantaloupe hybrid celebrated each August at the Melon Festival, and for the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest. The city also carries a complicated history, from an Underground Railroad stop to a mid-20th-century association with the Ku Klux Klan that the community has actively repudiated.

History of Howell

  • Livingston County was established March 24, 1836, and the first post office opened in January 1836 at the Eagle Tavern under postmaster Flavius J. B. Crane.
  • Originally called Livingston Center, Howell was formally organized on March 14, 1863.
  • The Historic Howell Opera House downtown served as a station on the Underground Railroad for freedom seekers heading to Canada.
