About Lodi, Michigan
Lodi Township is 34 square miles of gently rolling Washtenaw County farmland southwest of Ann Arbor, drained by the Saline River and almost entirely dry, with water covering barely half a percent of it. German immigrant farm families took it over in the 1840s so thoroughly that the old county history put three-quarters of Lodi's soil in German hands, and their surnames still label the roads. It is quiet, prosperous and gravel-road rural, and in 2026 it used two back-to-back moratoriums to keep data centers out.
History of Lodi
- The first land purchase came on September 29, 1824, when Hugh Chrestie bought property in the Michigan Territory. He never settled there.
- Allen Williams entered lots in May 1825 and put up the first log house, making him the township's first settler. Rufus Knight, Orrin Howe and others bought in during early 1825.
- A wagon track was cut through the woods from Ann Arbor in 1826, and by that summer the settlement was filling with arrivals including John Lowry, John Cobb and the Booth brothers.
Landmarks and Places in Lodi
- Lodi Township Hall, 3755 Pleasant Lake Road, which carries an Ann Arbor mailing address despite sitting in a separate township.
The Lodi Economy
- Farming has always been the base. The first sawmill was built by Russell Briggs in 1829 and the Johnson Mill followed in 1838.
- The 19th-century county history judged the township to be entirely wanting in everything pertaining to manufactures beyond those sawmills and a planing mill, and no grist mill was ever built there.
- Today it is an affluent rural-residential township. The 2000 census recorded a median household income of $88,419 and a median family income of $96,233, with about 2.8 percent of families below the poverty line.
Community Life in Lodi
- Three school districts split the township. Saline Area Schools takes the majority, Ann Arbor Public Schools the northeast corner, and Dexter Community School District a small northwest piece.
