History of Warner

• The adjoining community of Elmira, which extends into Warner Township, was platted in 1880 under the name Windsor after the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad pushed into the area in 1873; the reason for the later change to Elmira is unknown.
• Elmira may have been named for Elmira Eldridge, one of the pioneer women of the community.

• Warner Township Hall, at 2434 Ray Street in Elmira.
• M-32, which runs through Elmira on the township's eastern edge.

The Warner Economy

• After the lumber industry declined around 1919, the Elmira area that Warner Township shares turned to potato farming, and by 1930 the community had earned the nickname The Potato Capital. Potato farming remains a major industry for the surrounding area.
• M-32 was first commissioned in 1919 and ran through Elmira, giving the area road access to Gaylord.

• Warner Township is served by Gaylord Community Schools, whose district boundaries extend west out of Otsego County into Warner Township in Antrim County.
