History of White Plains
- Settled in 1683 when men from Rye purchased about 4,435 acres from the Weckquaeskeck (Wappinger) people; the Native name 'Quarropas' meant white marshes or white plains, possibly from white balsam or mist over the swamps
- Eighteen settlers received a royal patent from King George II in 1721
- Became the seat of Westchester County in 1758 after the county government left West Chester (now part of the Bronx)
