History of Avon Lake

• The Erie people inhabited the shore in the seventeenth century. After the war with the Iroquois ended in 1656 they were largely dispersed or absorbed into Iroquois society, and the area stayed thinly populated until the Lenape and Wyandot moved in around 1700.
• Moravian missionaries founded the first European settlement in the area in 1786.
• The Northwest Indian War led to the Treaty of Greenville, under which all land east of the Cuyahoga River was given up, placing the future Avon Lake within the Connecticut Western Reserve. Remaining claims were removed by the Treaty of St. Mary's in 1818.

Landmarks and Places in Avon Lake

• Peter Miller House, built in 1830 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 25, 1978. It is the city's only National Register listing.
• Veterans Memorial Park, on the Lake Erie shore.

The Avon Lake Economy

• Avon Lake hosts a number of industrial companies, including facilities for Lubrizol, Ford Motor Company, PolyOne Corporation, Western Enterprises and Reliant Energy.

• Roughly 220 acres of the city is designated for parks and playgrounds.
• The city operates six community parks, Bleser Park, Miller Road Park, Veterans Memorial Park, Weiss Field, Walker Road Park and Bicentennial Park, and manages neighborhood parks at Belle Road, Inwood, Overlook, Resatar and Sunset, each with adjoining bike trails.
• The Ellen Trivanovich Aquatic Center, rebuilt in 2010, includes a splash ground, a lazy river, regulation lanes, three water slides and a zero-depth entry.
