Choctaw, Chickasaw and Creek people knew the area as Tiyuk Hekia, or Standing Pine.
The town is named for Major Frank Overton, an early settler who gave part of his land for the townsite.
Overton was platted in 1873, the same year it received a post office.
The 16-mile Henderson and Overton Branch Railroad was finished in 1875, and the International-Great Northern line later joined it.
Most of the city is served by Overton ISD, while the Smith County part is in Arp ISD and a small Rusk County area is in West Rusk ISD.
