About Richmond, Virginia

Richmond is Virginia's capital, set on the falls of the James River, where founding-era history meets a young, arts-driven present. Patrick Henry's 'give me liberty or give me death' speech rang out here in 1775, and the city later served as the capital of the Confederacy. Today it is a River City known for murals, VCU students, tobacco heritage, and Fortune 500 headquarters, and it functions as an independent city bordered by Chesterfield and Henrico counties.

History of Richmond

• Richmond served as the capital of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War, and much of the city burned in the 1865 evacuation fire.
