Albany sits on the Flint River in southwest Georgia, a former cotton and pecan hub that grew up around railroads and abundant artesian groundwater. It is the birthplace of Ray Charles and a landmark of the Civil Rights Movement through the 1961-1962 Albany Movement. Today health care, education, and a Marine Corps logistics base drive the local economy.

About Albany
Also known as. The Artesian City. The Good Life City. The Pecan City.
History. Founded in October 1836 by land speculator and merchant Nelson Tift as a cotton market on the banks of the Flint River, and named for Albany, New York. The Creek people called their home along the riverbank 'Thronateeska,' meaning 'the place where flint is picked up.' A railroad connected Albany with Macon in 1857, and six more rail lines later converged to make it a transportation hub. Farmers began planting pecan trees in the 1890s; the Albany District Pecan Exchange completed its factory and warehouse in 1922. Dougherty County, about 330 square miles, was carved from Baker County in 1853 and named for Athens judge Charles Dougherty; Albany is the county seat.
Local economy. Health care, education, and Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany are the largest employers. Manufacturing, transportation, and retail trade anchor the broader economy. Pecans became a major local product after the 1890s, contributing to Georgia's standing as a top pecan-producing state. Cooper Tire and Rubber closed its Albany plant in 2008, eliminating roughly 1,400 jobs.
Culture and community. Ray Charles was born in Albany; Ray Charles Plaza on Front Street features a life-size bronze statue of him seated at a baby grand piano. The Albany Movement of 1961-1962 was a major nonviolent civil rights campaign against segregation. The Mardi Gras Street Festival is held downtown the first weekend of March. The Albany Pecan Festival celebrates the area's signature crop with pecan-based foods.
What makes Albany distinct. Albany reports thunder on about 86 days per year, more than double the national average. The 1974 U.S. Supreme Court case Jenkins v. Georgia originated here after a theater manager was convicted for showing the film 'Carnal Knowledge.' The 'Artesian City' nickname comes from the area's abundant groundwater, drawn from four aquifers that need only chlorination and fluoridation.
