History. Land was patented in 1833 by Elisha Ely, Samuel Hubbard, Charles Christopher Trowbridge, Pliny Cutler and Edmund Monroe, drawn by the Kalamazoo River's water power and transport. A dam and sawmill were established by 1835. The name 'Allegan' was coined in 1837 by Michigan historian Henry Rowe Schoolcraft as a neologism meant to sound like a Native American word. Organized as a village in 1838 and incorporated as a city in 1907. In 1914 the short-lived Cornelian automobile, a chain-drive cyclecar tied to Howard E. Blood and racer Louis Chevrolet, was built in Allegan; fewer than 100 were made.
Local economy. Perrigo Company, founded in Allegan in 1887, grew into the world's largest maker of private-label over-the-counter pharmaceuticals and remains the city's largest employer. Historic manufacturers in Allegan included Haworth (office seating) and Rockwell. The Kalamazoo River's water power and timber trade drove the city's original industrial and farming economy.
Culture and community. The Allegan County Fair each September is widely reputed as the largest county fair in Michigan. Bridgefest, celebrating the Old Iron Bridge and the start of summer, has run on the second Saturday of June since the mid-1980s. Allegan hosts Michigan's largest New Year's Eve ball drop: a 10-foot-6-inch globe lit with 30,000 synchronized LEDs that drops 50 feet at the downtown Riverfront Park, drawing more than 3,000 people. The historic Regent Theatre shows first-run movies seven days a week downtown.
