Web Design for Alpena, Michigan
Alpena is the largest city on Michigan's northeastern Lake Huron shore, the 'Sunrise Side,' and the gateway to the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and its roughly 100 preserved shipwrecks. A cement-and-limestone town sitting almost exactly on the 45th parallel, it pairs one of the world's largest cement plants with an underwater museum of history. Cold, fresh Lake Huron water keeps century-old wooden wrecks eerily intact just offshore.
AppWT serves Alpena and the surrounding Michigan area from Livonia, Michigan.
About Alpena
Also known as. Sanctuary of the Great Lakes. Shipwreck Alley (for its Thunder Bay waters).
History. Founded in 1840, initially under the name Fremont after explorer John C. Fremont. The county name is a coined word attributed to Henry Schoolcraft, understood to mean roughly 'good partridge country.' Incorporated as a city on March 29, 1871. Struck by devastating fires, including the Great Michigan Fire of 1871 and an even larger blaze on July 12, 1872 that destroyed 65 buildings and killed at least four people. In the 1910s, the short-lived Alpena Motor Car Company tried and failed to turn Alpena into an 'Automobile City.'
Local economy. Home to one of the world's largest cement plants (Lafarge/Holcim) and one of the world's largest limestone quarries. Besser Company, founded by Jesse Besser, manufactures concrete-block machinery used worldwide. MidMichigan Health (the Alpena hospital) is the largest current employer. Decorative Panels International produces drywall/hardboard locally. Constant freighter traffic serving the cement and limestone industries has shaped the harbor for over a century.
Culture and community. The Michigan Brown Trout Festival, running since 1975, is a 10-day event on Thunder Bay and the longest-running fishing tournament on the Great Lakes. The Thunder Bay Maritime Festival features glass-bottom boat tours over shipwrecks and a Cardboard Boat Regatta. Thunder Bay Theatre offers year-round professional theatre in the historic 1904 Spens Block. Downtown Alpena holds 200-plus businesses including a winery (Thunder Bay Winery), a brewery (Fletcher Street Brewing), galleries and theaters.
What makes Alpena distinct. Alpena sits on the 45th parallel north, roughly halfway between the equator and the North Pole. It is the third-smallest Nielsen television market in the United States (DMA #208). Lake Huron's cold, fresh water preserves the offshore wooden shipwrecks so well that many remain intact in depths from a few inches to 200 feet. Its stretch of Lake Huron has earned the nickname 'Shipwreck Alley' for the sheer number of vessels lost there.
