Alpharetta is an affluent northern suburb of Atlanta in Fulton County that traded its cotton-and-textile roots for a booming tech economy, earning the nickname the 'Technology City of the South.' More than 700 technology companies operate here, employing over 100,000 people, while the Avalon development and a walkable historic downtown give it a polished live-work-play identity. It also keeps its equestrian traditions alive at Wills Park and its concert scene humming at the Ameris Bank Amphitheatre.

About Alpharetta
Also known as. Technology City of the South.
History. The area was Cherokee land along a trail running from the North Georgia mountains to the Chattahoochee River before the Cherokee were forcibly removed under the Indian Removal Act in the 1830s. Alpharetta was incorporated on December 11, 1858, and became the county seat of Milton County. The name may derive from 'Alfarata,' a fictional Native American maiden in the 19th-century song 'The Blue Juniata,' or from 'alpha,' the first letter of the Greek alphabet. Boll weevil infestations and the Great Depression devastated the local cotton economy in the early 20th century. Milton County merged into Fulton County in 1931 during the Depression, bringing lower taxes, paved roads, and better schools.
Local economy. More than 700 technology companies are headquartered or operate in Alpharetta, employing over 100,000 people and earning the 'Technology City of the South' nickname. Top private employers include ADP (~4,000), Morgan Stanley (~2,500), AT&T (~2,200), Equifax (~2,100), Jackson Healthcare (~2,000), and Fiserv (~1,907). The city invested heavily in optical-fiber infrastructure beginning in the 1980s, seeding its data-center and tech growth. Tech North Atlanta (formerly Tech Alpharetta), founded in 2012, runs an innovation center and monthly events to support technology startups. The 86-acre Avalon mixed-use development, opened in 2014, is a major retail, office, and residential hub.

Signature festivals include Taste of Alpharetta in May and the Alpharetta Brew Moon Fest on the first Saturday of October. Wills Park hosts a large equestrian center and horse shows, preserving the area's horse-country heritage. The Big Creek Greenway offers a 12-mile paved path for walking, jogging, and biking. Notable people connected to Alpharetta include Backstreet Boys singer Brian Littrell and U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
What makes Alpharetta distinct. The city's name may literally come from 'alpha,' the first letter of the Greek alphabet. Alpharetta was the county seat of Milton County, a county that no longer exists after its 1931 merger into Fulton. With 700-plus tech firms, it is often called Georgia's answer to Silicon Valley. The Walk of Memories at American Legion Post 201 is billed as Georgia's only war memorial honoring veterans from every conflict since World War II. Alpharetta is the 12th most populous city in Georgia, with 65,818 residents at the 2020 census.
