Apache Junction sits where the old Apache Trail meets the highway at the jagged foot of the Superstition Mountains, a self-described city 'Surrounded by Legends.' It is snowbird country and treasure-hunter country, forever tied to the Lost Dutchman's gold mine and home to Goldfield Ghost Town and an Elvis Presley movie-set chapel.

About Apache Junction
Also known as. AJ. Gateway to the Superstitions. Surrounded by Legends (the city's official motto). formerly Youngberg / Youngsberg Junction.
History. Named for the junction of the Apache Trail and the Old West Highway (U.S. Route 60); traveling salesman George Cleveland Curtis campaigned in the early 1920s to rename the settlement from Youngsberg Junction to Apache Junction, feeling the old name lacked color. First appeared on the U.S. Census in 1970 as an unincorporated village and formally incorporated as a city on November 24, 1978. Bound up with the Lost Dutchman legend: German immigrant Jacob Waltz, documented in Arizona Territory from 1863 to 1891, died in Phoenix on October 25, 1891 without revealing the source of the rich gold ore found beneath his deathbed. Prospectors searched the base of Superstition Mountain for gold as early as the late 1860s, and a major gold strike at nearby Goldfield in 1892 briefly boomed the area.
Local economy. A longtime winter haven for 'snowbirds,' with a retiree-heavy population reflected in a median age around 52.5 and roughly a third of residents aged 65 or older. Tourism built around the Superstition Mountains, Goldfield Ghost Town, and the Arizona Renaissance Festival. Commuter and economic ties to Phoenix, about 33 miles west via U.S. Route 60. Affordability that continues to draw retirees, families, and young professionals to the eastern edge of the Phoenix metro.
Culture and community. The Arizona Renaissance Festival, held each February and March just southeast of the city since 1988, with jousting, falconry, and feasts. Goldfield Ghost Town, a recreated 1890s mining town with the only operating narrow-gauge railroad in Arizona, staged gunfights, mine tours, and gold panning. Lost Dutchman Days and the Artists of the Superstitions Studio Tour. The Superstition Mountain Museum, blending Old West history with movie-ranch relics.
What makes Apache Junction distinct. The Elvis Presley Memorial Chapel at the Superstition Mountain Museum is a movie prop built for Elvis Presley's 1969 Western 'Charro!' (the only Elvis film in which he does not sing on screen); it and a barn were the only structures to survive fires at the Apacheland Movie Ranch, which hosted around 30 films and a dozen-plus TV shows before burning in 1969 and again in 2004. The Lost Dutchman gold legend still lures treasure hunters into the Superstitions, some of whom have died searching. The city's official motto is 'Surrounded by Legends.' With its high median age and heavy winter-visitor population, Apache Junction is one of Arizona's signature snowbird destinations.
