Web Design for Aurora, Colorado
Aurora is Colorado's third-largest city, an expansive eastern-plains neighbor of Denver that has grown from a silver-era railroad suburb into one of the most diverse cities in the Rocky Mountain West. It is anchored by Buckley Space Force Base and the sprawling Anschutz Medical Campus, built on the grounds of the former Fitzsimons Army Hospital. Home to large Ethiopian, Eritrean, Nepalese, and Latino communities, its motto "The World in a City" is reflected in classrooms where students speak more than 160 languages.
AppWT works with Aurora, CO businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.
About Aurora
Also known as. Gateway to the Rockies. The Sunrise of Colorado. A-Town. The World in a City (official marketing slogan).
History. Aurora originated around 1890 as the town of Fletcher, named after Denver businessman and developer Donald Fletcher. The Town of Fletcher was incorporated on May 5, 1903; after Fletcher left amid a financial bust, residents renamed it Aurora in 1907 after one of the original subdivisions. Aurora reincorporated as a city on March 9, 1928. Fitzsimons Army Hospital opened in 1918 to treat World War I soldiers with tuberculosis and was named for Lt. William T. Fitzsimons, the first American medical officer killed in WWI; it closed in 1996 and became the Anschutz Medical Campus. In 1965 Mayor Norma O. Walker became the first woman to head a U.S. city with a population over 60,000. The July 20, 2012 mass shooting at an Aurora movie theater killed 12 people and injured dozens, one of the deadliest such attacks in modern U.S. history.
Local economy. Buckley Space Force Base is the largest single employer, with roughly 12,100 personnel. Healthcare and bioscience anchor the economy through the Anschutz Medical Campus, University of Colorado Hospital, and Children's Hospital Colorado. Defense contractor Raytheon Technologies and Kaiser Permanente are major private employers. The former Fitzsimons grounds now host the Fitzsimons Innovation Community, a medical research park drawing healthcare and bioscience firms. Aurora Public Schools is among the largest public-sector employers in the city.
Culture and community. Aurora is strikingly diverse: its public-school students come from more than 130 countries and speak over 160 languages. The Denver-Aurora area is home to roughly 30,000 Ethiopians and Eritreans plus a sizable Nepalese refugee population, shaping the city's restaurants and shops. La Plaza, billed as the largest Hispanic food hall in the United States, opened in Aurora in 2024. The city's dining guide spans more than 200 eateries serving food from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe. Stanley Marketplace, a food-and-retail hall in the former Stanley Aviation factory, opened in 2016 and became a community gathering hub. The Aurora Fox Theatre & Arts Center is a 245-seat venue in the Aurora Cultural Arts District.
What makes Aurora distinct. Aurora has surpassed Denver in land area since the 2000 Census, sprawling across the eastern plains even though Denver has more people. The city spills across three counties: Adams, Arapahoe, and Douglas. Aurora's Prairie Waters Project (2010) pioneered large-scale "bank filtration" water reuse in the United States. Sitting east of I-25 in tornado-prone plains, Aurora residents hear tornado sirens more often than neighboring Denver. Sports Illustrated named Aurora Colorado's "Sportstown" in 2004.
