About Avon Lake

History. The Erie people inhabited the shore in the seventeenth century. After the war with the Iroquois ended in 1656 they were largely dispersed or absorbed into Iroquois society, and the area stayed thinly populated until the Lenape and Wyandot moved in around 1700. Moravian missionaries founded the first European settlement in the area in 1786. The Northwest Indian War led to the Treaty of Greenville, under which all land east of the Cuyahoga River was given up, placing the future Avon Lake within the Connecticut Western Reserve. Remaining claims were removed by the Treaty of St. Mary's in 1818. Noah Davis, described as the first lakeshore dweller, arrived in 1812 and lived about a year in a three-sided cabin near the present-day junction of Lake and Moore Roads. Wilbur Cahoon, who owned the land, met Davis and on his advice moved further south in 1814 into the French Creek precinct, which was less marshy and better for farming. Cuyahoga County redrew its boundaries in 1818, splitting the former entity into Troy Township in the west and Dover Township in the east. Adam Miller and his family arrived the following year. Lorain County was formed in 1822, and Troy Township was renamed Avon Township by petition in 1824. Avon Lake separated from the rest of Avon township to form its own township, and was later granted city status in 1960.
