Beaverton is Washington County's second-largest city and a western suburb of Portland, best known worldwide as the home of Nike's sprawling world headquarters campus. Named for the beaver-dammed wetlands that once covered the valley, it grew from a Kalapuya homeland and railroad farm town into a high-tech and sportswear hub within Oregon's 'Silicon Forest.' It is also one of Oregon's most ethnically diverse cities and home to one of the state's largest farmers markets.

About Beaverton
Also known as. Place of the Beaver (from the Kalapuya name Chakeipi/Tch'akeipi). Beaverdam (early settler name). Part of the 'Silicon Forest'.
History. The Atfalati (Tualatin) band of the Kalapuya people lived in the area for thousands of years and called it Chakeipi, 'place of the beaver.' Settlers referred to the beaver-dam wetlands as 'Beaverdam'; the city's name derives from that large body of water. Lawrence Hall purchased 640 acres in 1847 and built a grist mill; Thomas Denney built the first sawmill in 1848. A plank road connecting the settlement to Portland was completed in 1860. Beaverton was incorporated in 1893 with about 400 residents; Alonzo Cady served as first mayor. Electronics firms Tektronix (1959) and Electro Scientific Industries (1962) moved in, establishing the area as a tech center.
Local economy. Nike, Inc. is headquartered on a campus surrounded by Beaverton and is by far the largest employer (roughly 6,000 local employees). The Beaverton School District, one of Oregon's largest, is the second-biggest employer. Other major employers and firms include Tektronix, Analog Devices, Leupold & Stevens, and Reser's Fine Foods (headquartered locally since 1960). Part of the 'Silicon Forest' technology corridor shared with neighboring Hillsboro. Seventh most populous city in Oregon (about 97,500 residents in 2020).
Culture and community. The Beaverton Farmers Market is the largest agricultural-only farmers market in the Pacific Northwest, drawing 15,000-20,000 visitors on a summer Saturday. The Patricia Reser Center for the Arts, a 550-seat performing-arts venue, opened in 2022. BG's Food Cartel, a food-cart pod with about 31 carts, opened in 2018 and reflects the city's diverse food scene. One of Oregon's most ethnically diverse cities, with large Hispanic and Asian communities. Notable residents include actress Katee Sackhoff, basketball player Cameron Brink, NPR host Ari Shapiro, and Kiss guitarist Tommy Thayer.
What makes Beaverton distinct. Nike's global headquarters sit on land technically within unincorporated Washington County, surrounded by (but not inside) the Beaverton city limits. The city literally owes its name to beavers, whose dams created the wetlands early settlers drained to build the town. Beaverton maintains sister-city ties as far afield as Gotemba (Japan), Cheonan (South Korea), and Birobidzhan (Russia). Tektronix, founded near here in the mid-20th century, helped seed the entire 'Silicon Forest' of Oregon tech firms.
