History. First settled by lumbermen around 1863 and known as Grand Forks for the confluence of the Tobacco and Cedar rivers. Marvil Secord, originally from Brantford, Ontario, is recognized as the first permanent settler in Gladwin County. Founded in 1890 by the Donald Gunn Ross & Sons lumber company, which came from Beaverton, Ontario, giving the Michigan town its name. Donald Ross became the first postmaster on February 17, 1891. Incorporated as a village January 9, 1896, and as a city in 1903, with William Ross as the first mayor. Served as a station on the Toledo-Ludington line of the Pere Marquette Railroad.
Local economy. Home to Brown Machine (established 1952), a global thermoforming equipment manufacturer whose presence gave the city its 'Thermoforming Capital of the World' identity. Brown Machine operates a roughly 135,000-square-foot factory on the Tobacco River at 330 N. Ross Street with 200-plus skilled employees. Now the flagship of Brown Machine Group (BMG), an integrated group of brands including Brown, Lyle, GN, Freeman and NAS, making packaging and thermoforming equipment.
