History. First settled in 1838 by Levi Broas; the community was known successively as Broas Rapids, Patterson Mills, and (during logging days) 'Hog Wallow.' Renamed Belding in 1871 to honor the Belding family, silk merchants who built their manufacturing empire in the town. The first silk mill in Belding, the Richardson Mill, opened in 1886, and the industry grew to command roughly 90% of the U.S. silk market. Belding Brothers & Company merged with Heminway Silk in 1925 (as Belding-Heminway) and was later absorbed by Corticelli; the last Belding mill closed in the early-to-mid 1930s. The city is geographically unusual in being completely surrounded by Otisco Township.
Local economy. The Belding Brothers and Company silk mills were the defining industry, employing hundreds of workers, about 75% of them young women earning roughly eight dollars a week. At the industry's height Belding produced over one million pounds of silk annually. After the silk mills closed in the 1930s, the economy shifted toward small manufacturing and serving the surrounding Flat River / Ionia County region.
Culture and community. The annual Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament fills the downtown with dozens of courts, food vendors and music, drawing huge crowds and raising money for local charities. Belding hosts an annual Labor Day celebration and a 'Home for the Holidays' celebration. Marie Ziegler, a player in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (of 'A League of Their Own' fame), came from Belding.
