History. The township was established March 11, 1837, and named after Thomas Hart Benton, a U.S. senator from Missouri; it stayed administratively attached to St. Joseph Township until 1841. Jehiel Enos was an early settler, arriving in 1834. The Israelite House of David commune, founded in 1903 by Benjamin Purnell (1861-1927) and Mary Purnell (1862-1953), grew to several hundred members and by 1907 farmed roughly 1,000 acres of orchards and grain. In 1908 the commune opened Eden Springs Park, an amusement park and zoo with coal-powered miniature locomotives inspired by trains its members saw at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. After Benjamin Purnell's death, a faction led by Mary Purnell reorganized in 1930 as the New Israelite House of David, better known as Mary's City of David. The Benton Harbor Fruit Market, established in 1860, relocated into the township in 1967.
