Web Design for Beverly, Massachusetts

Beverly is a historic North Shore seacoast city in Essex County, settled in 1626 and a longtime rival of neighboring Marblehead for the title 'Birthplace of America's Navy.' It claims that honor because the armed schooner USS Hannah, the first ship commissioned for the Continental Army, was outfitted at Glover's Wharf and first sailed from Beverly Harbor on September 5, 1775; the city was also home to America's first cotton mill.

AppWT works with Beverly, MA businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Beverly

Also known as. Birthplace of America's Navy. Birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution. Garden City.

History. Settled in 1626 by English colonists under Roger Conant; incorporated as a town in 1668 and named after Beverley, England; became a city in 1894. The armed schooner USS Hannah sailed from Beverly Harbor on September 5, 1775 as the first vessel commissioned for the Continental Army. Site of the first cotton mill in America, built in 1787 and the largest of its time. Home to the nation's first Sunday school, built in 1810. President William Howard Taft used Beverly as his 'Summer White House' from 1909 to 1912. A 1984 rooming-house arson, the deadliest arson fire in Massachusetts history, killed 15 people.

Local economy. Historic center of the American Industrial Revolution, from its 1787 cotton mill to the massive United Shoe Machinery Corporation factory built in 1902. Modern major employers include Axcelis Technologies (semiconductor equipment), Beverly Hospital/Lahey Health, Endicott College, and the YMCA of the North Shore. Coastal/suburban Boston economy anchored by health care, higher education, and advanced manufacturing.

Culture and community. Beverly Homecoming, a 10-day summer community festival with 40-plus events centered on Lynch Park. The Homecoming Lobster Festival at Lynch Park features a traditional lobster bake, chowder, and local bands under a tent. North Shore Music Theatre (opened 1955), the largest operating regional theater in New England and one of the few remaining theatre-in-the-round stages in the U.S. The Cabot, a restored 1920s movie palace, and the Larcom Theatre (1912) anchor the downtown arts scene.

What makes Beverly distinct. Beverly Hills, California was named in 1907 after Beverly's own Beverly Farms neighborhood. The Cabot theater hosted Le Grand David and His Own Spectacular Magic Company for 37 years, earning a Guinness record as the longest-running resident magic show. Beverly's claim as 'Birthplace of America's Navy' is a genuine, still-unsettled rivalry with next-door Marblehead. Notable residents have included Washington Post editor Benjamin C. Bradlee, author John Updike, and ALS advocate Pete Frates.
