History. Organized in February 1858 as Leonard Township; the Mecosta County government was organized on February 11, 1859, with the village of Leonard as its county seat. Renamed by legislative action in 1865 to Big Rapids Township. The City of Big Rapids within its borders was settled in 1855 by brothers George and Zera French (originally called Leonard), had its post office renamed Big Rapids on September 29, 1859, and incorporated as a city in 1869. Ferris Industrial School was founded in the city in 1884 by Woodbridge N. Ferris, who later became Governor of Michigan (1913) and a U.S. Senator (1922). Ferris became a public institution (Ferris Institute) in 1950, the same year a major fire destroyed its main buildings; it is now Ferris State University.
Local economy. Ferris State University is the leading employer in the Big Rapids area and the economic anchor of the township-and-city community. U.S. 131, a four-lane highway, bisects the township, running 41 miles north to Cadillac and 54 miles south to Grand Rapids. Serves as the regional retail and services hub for Mecosta County, with commercial corridors along U.S. 131.
