History. Settled in 1855 by brothers George and Zera French; the settlement was originally called Leonard. Became the seat of Mecosta County on February 11, 1859; the post office was renamed Big Rapids on September 29, 1859. Incorporated as a city in 1869. Woodbridge N. Ferris settled in Big Rapids in 1884 and founded the Ferris Industrial School (now Ferris State University); Ferris later served as the 28th Governor of Michigan and as a U.S. Senator. Suffrage leader Anna Howard Shaw grew up on a wilderness tract just north of Big Rapids after her family moved there in 1859; she became the first woman ordained in the Methodist Protestant Church and also earned a medical degree.

Local economy. Ferris State University is the dominant employer and economic anchor; the four-year public university's enrollment drives much of the local economy. Population and local economy have contracted alongside university enrollment declines; the city fell from a 1980 peak of 14,361 residents to 7,727 in 2020. Muskegon River recreation and tourism (tubing, paddling, the Riverwalk) support seasonal business. Serves as the retail and services hub for surrounding Mecosta County.

Culture and community. West Michigan Festival of the Arts, held each February, packs 75-plus events (music, visual, culinary and physical arts) across town and the Ferris campus.
