Biloxi is a historic Gulf Coast city in Harrison County, founded by the French in 1699 and later a shrimping-and-oyster powerhouse that branded itself the 'Seafood Capital of the World.' Today it is a resort and casino destination built along white-sand beaches, rebuilt with grit after Hurricane Katrina devastated it in 2005. Keesler Air Force Base, gleaming casinos, and a working seafood heritage all share the same shoreline.

About Biloxi
Also known as. Playground of the South. Seafood Capital of the World. Buck City.
History. French colonists under Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville established Fort Maurepas here in 1699, the first permanent European settlement in French Louisiana; the name comes from the local Biloxi people. Biloxi became the capital of French Louisiana around 1720 before the capital moved to New Orleans in 1722 under Bienville due to hurricane and tide concerns. The first seafood cannery opened in 1881, launching an industry that drew waves of European immigrants. The population surged 114.2% between 1940 and 1950 (from 17,475 to 37,425) as Keesler Field expanded during World War II. In 1959-1960, Dr. Gilbert R. Mason led the Biloxi Wade-Ins, protests that helped desegregate the beaches after a deadly 1960 confrontation. Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29, 2005, with a roughly 30-foot storm surge, causing catastrophic damage. 2020 census population of 49,449, making Biloxi Mississippi's fourth-most-populous city.
Local economy. Casino gaming is central: the Isle of Capri opened on August 1, 1992, launching the modern casino era, and the city now hosts eight casinos including the Beau Rivage, Hard Rock, and Harrah's Gulf Coast. Keesler Air Force Base, home of the 81st Training Wing and the 403rd Wing (Air Force Reserve), is a cornerstone employer. The seafood industry (shrimp, oysters, canning) remains a defining trade and cultural identity. Tourism markets Biloxi as the 'Playground of the South.'
Culture and community. The Blessing of the Fleet, held since 1929, blesses shrimp boats before the season for safe and bountiful fishing. The Biloxi Shuckers, a Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers since 2015, play at Keesler Federal Park; their alternate identity is the 'Biloxi King Cakes.' Mardi Gras runs deep, with the city's first parade held in 1908. Cruisin' the Coast is one of the country's largest classic-car gatherings, drawing enthusiasts from over 40 states each fall. The Biloxi Seafood Festival on the Town Green features a gumbo cook-off and family activities.
What makes Biloxi distinct. Actress Jessica Alba spent part of her childhood in Biloxi while her father was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base. Author John Kennedy Toole, whose 'A Confederacy of Dunces' won a posthumous Pulitzer, died in Biloxi in 1969. The Miss Teen USA pageant was held in Biloxi from 1990 to 1994. The Biloxi Shuckers' name and 'King Cakes' alternate identity nod to both the shrimp-shucking trade and the city's long Mardi Gras tradition. Biloxi served as the colonial capital of French Louisiana before New Orleans took the role.
