Binghamton sits in a bowl-shaped valley at the confluence of the Susquehanna and Chenango rivers in New York's Southern Tier, the seat of Broome County and the heart of the Triple Cities with Endicott and Johnson City. Once a cigar and shoe manufacturing giant and the birthplace of IBM and the flight simulator, it is now famous for its six antique carousels, the tangy grilled spiedie sandwich, and native son Rod Serling.

About Binghamton
Also known as. The Parlor City. Carousel Capital of the World. Valley of Opportunity.
History. William Bingham purchased a 10,000-acre patent in 1786, and Joshua Whitney Jr. chose the river-confluence site; the settlement, first called Chenango Point, was renamed and incorporated as a village in 1834 and a city in 1867. The Chenango Canal (completed 1837) connected the area to the Erie Canal, and the Erie Railroad arrived in 1849, fueling rapid industrial growth. Incorporation as a city in 1867 brought the 'Parlor City' nickname, earned from the town's many stately homes. The 1913 Binghamton Clothing Company fire killed 31 workers and helped drive reforms to New York State's fire codes. On April 3, 2009 a mass shooting at the American Civic Association became, at the time, the deadliest such shooting in New York State history.
Local economy. In the 1880s Binghamton was the second-largest cigar manufacturer in the United States. Endicott Johnson, a shoe manufacturer that pioneered 'welfare capitalism' with amenities for workers, became the region's largest employer by the early 1920s. IBM traces its origins to the greater Binghamton area and employed 15,000-20,000 people locally at its peak; Edwin Link invented the flight simulator (the Link Trainer) here. The modern economy leans on defense contractors (Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems), healthcare, and higher education, anchored by Binghamton University.
Culture and community. The spiedie, a sandwich of marinated, grilled cubed meat, is the signature regional dish, celebrated each August at the Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally. Rod Serling, creator of The Twilight Zone, grew up in Binghamton and drew on his boyhood at Recreation Park; the town's carousel there inspired his nostalgic writing. The arts scene includes the Binghamton Philharmonic (founded 1955), Tri-Cities Opera (performing since 1949), the First Friday Art Walk, and the LUMA Projection Arts Festival. Hall of Fame pitcher Whitey Ford played for the Binghamton Triplets in 1949, and the Broome Dusters hockey fervor once led The Hockey News to dub the city 'Hockey Town USA.'
What makes Binghamton distinct. All six of the region's antique carousels were gifts of shoe magnate George F. Johnson and, per his wish, remain free to ride. The American Farm Bureau movement traces its start to Binghamton in 1911. It is one of the cloudiest and wettest cities in the country, logging about 164 days of measurable precipitation and roughly 86.5 inches of snow a year. Unlike much of upstate New York, locals say 'sneakers' and 'soda' rather than 'tennis shoes' and 'pop.'
