Bountiful is Utah's second-oldest settlement, spread across the benches between the Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake just north of Salt Lake City in Davis County. Founded by Mormon pioneer Perrigrine Sessions in 1847 and named both for a Book of Mormon city and its own bounty of gardens, it grew into a leafy commuter suburb crowned by the white 1995 Bountiful Utah Temple.

About Bountiful
Also known as. Originally 'Sessions Settlement' and the ecclesiastical 'North Canyon Ward' before being renamed Bountiful in 1855. Named for its gardening bounty and for a city in the Book of Mormon.
History. Perrigrine Sessions and his family camped and wintered here on September 27, 1847, making Bountiful Utah's second settlement and the first home in what is now Davis County. First called Sessions Settlement and North Canyon Ward, the community was officially named Bountiful in 1855. Because of repeated conflicts with Native Americans, settlers built a dirt-walled fort roughly three-quarters of a mile square and laid the townsite within it. The city incorporated in 1892 with Joseph L. Holbrook as its first mayor. The Bountiful Utah Temple was dedicated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1995.
Local economy. Bountiful functions largely as a bedroom and commuter community for Salt Lake City, connected by Interstate 15 and the Legacy Parkway. The surrounding Davis County economy is anchored by Hill Air Force Base, Lifetime Products, and aerospace manufacturing by Northrop Grumman/former ATK (solid rocket motors). Autoliv and regional healthcare providers such as Lakeview Hospital are significant Davis County employers. Local activity spans healthcare, education, retail, manufacturing, and professional services.
Culture and community. Handcart Days, held each July around Utah's Pioneer Day (July 24), commemorates the 1847 pioneer arrival and features what is billed as the state's second-largest parade, fireworks, and games. The Bountiful Davis Art Center (BDAC), founded in 1974, is the area's arts hub. BDAC's Summerfest International Art & Folk Festival brings global music, dance, and ethnic food to Bountiful City Park. A pioneer and gardening heritage runs through local identity, reflected in the city's very name.
What makes Bountiful distinct. Bountiful was settled only days after Salt Lake City, making it Utah's second-oldest community. Serial killer Ted Bundy abducted 17-year-old Debra Kent from Viewmont High School in Bountiful on November 8, 1974. Notable people from Bountiful include deaf actress Millicent Simmonds ('A Quiet Place'), Olympic beach volleyball player Jake Gibb, and former Utah Governor Calvin Rampton. The Heber C. Kimball Gristmill operated in Bountiful from 1852 until 1892, and its foundation can still be seen.
