Bridgeport is one of Saginaw County's oldest townships, born where the old Flint Trail crossed a sharp bend in the Cass River, which gave the settlement its first names, 'The Bend of the Cass' and 'Cass Bend.' Today it is a township of roughly 10,100 people straddling Interstate 75 just south of Saginaw, best known as the western doorstep to Bavarian-themed Frankenmuth and as home to the world's largest quarter-scale railroad.

About Bridgeport Charter Township
Also known as. The Bend of the Cass. Cass Bend. Gateway to Frankenmuth.
History. First settlers arrived around 1835; Auri Campbell is credited as the first settler and built the first house in the township. Originally called 'The Bend of the Cass' or 'Cass Bend' because the Cass River makes a sharp bend at the village site. Lilly Cook started the village and named it 'Bridgeport' because it sat where the Flint trail crossed the Cass River. Organized as a township in 1848. A sawmill was built in 1849; by the mid-1860s the area also had a shingle mill, three shingle factories, and a salt well. By the 1880s the economy shifted to farming; a grist mill was built in 1878 by John and Martin Messner.
Local economy. Historically driven by timber (sawmills, shingle mills) and a salt well, then by agriculture and grist milling by the late 1800s. Modern economy is residential and commercial, concentrated along the Interstate 75 and Dixie Highway corridors within the Saginaw metro area. Served by the Bridgeport-Spaulding Community School District.
Culture and community. The Historical Society of Bridgeport, based at 6190 Dixie Highway, runs the Bridgeport Historical Village Museum. The Historical Society hosts a summer flea market (starting in early June) at the Historical Village. Free concerts are held Tuesday nights in July and August at the Historical Village. Culturally tied to neighboring Frankenmuth, roughly five miles east, and its Bavarian tourism scene (Bronner's Christmas Wonderland, Zehnder's/Bavarian Inn, St. Julian Winery).
What makes Bridgeport Charter Township distinct. Junction Valley Railroad was hand-built by one man and his family and is considered the largest quarter-scale railroad in the world.
