Web Design for Bridgeport, Connecticut
Bridgeport is Connecticut's most populous city, a Long Island Sound port at the mouth of the Pequonnock River nicknamed 'The Park City' for its roughly 1,300 acres of public parks. Showman P.T. Barnum lived here, served as mayor in 1871, wintered his circus in town, and helped create its signature Seaside Park. Once the state's manufacturing powerhouse, it weathered deindustrialization and is now known for its zoo, arena, and waterfront redevelopment.

About Bridgeport
Also known as. The Park City. Connecticut's largest city.
History. Incorporated as a town in 1821 and as a city in 1836; named for a drawbridge over the Pequonnock River. P.T. Barnum served as mayor in 1871, built four homes in the city, and made it his circus's winter quarters. Became Connecticut's chief manufacturing center by 1905, home to Remington Arms, whose WWI plant employed 16,000-plus workers, plus Singer, General Electric, and Wheeler & Wilson sewing machines. Site of the world's first mutual telephone exchange (1877); Harvey Hubbell patented the electric plug outlet here (1912). German immigrant Gustave Whitehead claimed to have flown a powered aircraft over Bridgeport in 1901, a disputed claim predating the Wright Brothers. Suffered severe deindustrialization in the 1970s and 1980s.
Local economy. Historic identity as an industrial and arms-manufacturing hub (Remington Arms, GE, Singer). Higher education and health care anchor the modern economy, including the University of Bridgeport and Housatonic Community College. Sikorsky Aircraft, a major regional employer, operates in the Bridgeport area. Waterfront and downtown redevelopment centered on the Total Mortgage Arena and the adjacent ballpark.
Culture and community. The Barnum Festival, running since 1948, honors P.T. Barnum with parades, concerts, and the kids' Wing Ding Parade at Beardsley Zoo. Total Mortgage Arena hosts the Bridgeport Islanders (AHL affiliate of the New York Islanders) and the Westchester Knicks G-League games. The Gathering of the Vibes jam-band music festival was long held at Seaside Park. Diverse food scene reflecting large Latino, Portuguese, and Caribbean communities.
What makes Bridgeport distinct. The Frisbie Pie Company was based in Bridgeport, and its empty tin pie plates, flung by college students, gave the Frisbee its name. The very first Subway sandwich shop opened in Bridgeport in 1965, started by 17-year-old Fred DeLuca to pay for college. Joseph Ganim became one of the nation's youngest big-city mayors at 33 in 1991, was later imprisoned for corruption, and then was re-elected mayor years afterward. Local lore credits Gustave Whitehead with beating the Wright Brothers into the air by two years.
