Web Design for Bridgman, Michigan

Bridgman is a small Lake Michigan city on the Berrien County 'Sunset Coast,' tucked among wooded dunes in Southwest Michigan's Harbor Country region. Founded on sand dunes and a 19th-century lumber railroad, it grew from the platting of George C. Bridgman in 1870 and today thrives on beach tourism, dune hiking and a booming winery-brewery-cidery scene. It also holds a strange footnote in American history as the site of a secret 1922 Communist Party convention raided by federal agents.

AppWT serves Bridgman and the surrounding Michigan area from Livonia, Michigan.

About Bridgman

Also known as. Southwest Michigan's Dune Destination.

History. Lumbermen established a spot called Plummer's Pier and founded Charlotteville in the area in 1856. George C. Bridgman platted the village of Bridgman in 1870, centered on a newly opened railroad station. The post office opened as 'Laketon' on November 11, 1862, and was renamed Bridgman on April 9, 1874. Hard times hit between 1880 and 1890 as the sawmill closed and rail traffic declined, but prosperity returned after 1890 as Russian and German immigrants moved into the area. Bridgman later annexed the former Charlotteville area. In 1922 the town hosted the clandestine Bridgman Convention of the Communist Party, which was broken up by federal Bureau of Investigation agents and local authorities.

Local economy. The D.C. Cook Nuclear Plant in adjacent Lake Township is a major regional energy employer and tax base; the loss of about $1.2 million in Cook property taxes forced Bridgman schools to cut roughly 20 positions in one year. Hospitality and tourism anchor the local economy, drawing visitors to the downtown, Weko Beach and the surrounding dunes. A thriving craft-beverage sector includes wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries, with a Tabor Hill Winery tasting room in Bridgman. Bridgman is one of the Southwest Michigan 'Makers Trail' towns, within minutes of more than 40 craft beverage makers. Historic economy was rooted in lumber and the railroad that gave the village its start.

Culture and community. The Makers Trail Festival is held the second Saturday of June at Weko Beach, featuring wine, beer, cider and spirits makers with live music and local food trucks. The Weko Beach Concert Series brings live outdoor music at sunset on Lake Michigan. Beach and dune recreation dominate summer culture, with swimming, hiking and camping among the wooded dunes. The Bridgman Public Library, established in 1966, also houses the Bridgman/Lake Township Historical Society. The city sits within Harbor Country, a stretch of Berrien County beach towns known regionally as a Chicago-area getaway.

What makes Bridgman distinct. The 1922 Bridgman Convention put this tiny beach town in national headlines when federal agents raided a secret Communist Party gathering on a nearby farm. Its post office spent its first dozen years under the completely different name 'Laketon.' The city literally rose from sand dunes and absorbed an older neighboring settlement, Charlotteville. A late-1800s wave of Russian and German immigrants reversed the town's near-collapse after the sawmill era ended. Bridgman produced NFL punter Ralf Mojsiejenko, chemist Herbert S. Gutowsky and NFL player-coach Jerry Planutis.
