Brighton is a bohemian seaside resort on the East Sussex coast, about 47 miles south of London, and forms the city of Brighton and Hove. Famous for the exotic Royal Pavilion, a pebble beach and a Victorian pleasure pier, it is one of the UK's leading LGBTQ+ and arts hubs, long drawing Londoners as a day-trip escape. Its mix of Regency architecture, independent shops and a thriving tech and creative economy give it a distinct, liberal character.

AppWT works with Brighton, England businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Brighton

Also known as. London-by-the-Sea. The Queen of Watering Places. Doctor Brighton. Old Ocean's Bauble.

History. Archaeological evidence shows settlement in the area from the Bronze Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon periods; the settlement of 'Brighthelmstone' is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. Fishing, especially mackerel, was the mainstay of the economy for its first roughly 700 years; in 1580 Brighton's fleet of about 80 boats and 10,000 nets was the largest in southern England, employing around 400 men. The town was sacked and burnt by French raiders in the early 16th century before recovering on its fishing trade. In 1786 the young Prince of Wales (later the Prince Regent and George IV) rented a farmhouse in the town and later built the exotic Royal Pavilion, cementing Brighton's status as a fashionable resort. The first train reached Brighton Railway Station on 21 September 1841; between 1841 and 1871 the population grew from 46,661 to 90,011, making it the fastest-growing town in Britain. Brighton rose in the 18th and 19th centuries as a health resort for sea bathing, promoted by figures such as Dr Richard Russell who advocated seawater cures.

Local economy. Fishing dominated the local economy for its first several centuries before tourism took over. American Express has its European headquarters in Brighton, and large employers include Lloyds Bank and Legal & General. The city is nicknamed 'Silicon Beach' for its cluster of digital technology, new media and creative firms. Tourism, conferences and the visitor economy remain central, supported by the seafront, pier and Brighton Centre. The University of Brighton (granted university status in 1992) and the nearby University of Sussex are major employers and drivers of the student economy.

Culture and community. Brighton Fringe is England's largest arts festival and one of the largest fringe festivals in the world, running across May and into June with hundreds of independent comedy, theatre, cabaret and music productions. The Great Escape Festival, founded in 2006, is a four-day new-music festival showcasing roughly 500 bands across around 30 venues throughout the city. Brighton Pride is one of the UK's biggest Pride events, with a large parade and festival drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors. A dense live-music scene runs through venues including Brighton Dome, Komedia and the Brighton Centre. Brighton and Hove Albion, nicknamed the Seagulls, is the city's Premier League football club.

What makes Brighton distinct. Brighton's Sea Life Centre is the oldest operating aquarium in the world, opened in 1872. Caroline Lucas, elected MP for Brighton Pavilion in 2010, became the Green Party's first Member of Parliament. Between 1841 and 1871 Brighton was the fastest-growing town in Britain. The nickname 'The Queen of Slaughtering Places' arose as a grim pun after the 1930s Brighton trunk murders. Poet Horace Smith dubbed it 'The Queen of Watering Places' and 'Old Ocean's Bauble', while novelist William Makepeace Thackeray called it 'Doctor Brighton' for its supposed health-giving air.
