Broken Arrow is Oklahoma's fourth-largest city and a major suburb of Tulsa, home to roughly 113,500 residents. Its revitalized downtown, the Rose District, has turned a three-block stretch of Main Street into the region's arts, dining, and festival hub. The city carries a deep Muscogee (Creek) heritage in both its name and origins.

About Broken Arrow

Also known as. City of Roses. BA.

History. The Missouri-Kansas-Texas (Katy) Railroad sold town-site lots in 1902; Broken Arrow incorporated in 1903. Company secretary William S. Fears named the town after an old Creek community; the Muscogee name 'Rekackv' translates to 'broken arrow.' The name honors a Creek settlement in Alabama whose members were removed to Indian Territory on the Trail of Tears in the 1830s and founded a new community bearing the old name. Early civic leaders urged residents to plant rose bushes to beautify the prairie town-site, earning the nickname 'City of Roses.' In October 2012 the downtown Main Street corridor was officially named the Rose District, followed by a redevelopment that narrowed the street from four lanes to two and widened sidewalks for outdoor dining.

Local economy. Broken Arrow has the third-largest concentration of manufacturers of any city in Oklahoma. FlightSafety International, an aviation training and simulator manufacturer, is the largest private employer with roughly 675-plus workers. Other major employers include FedEx Ground, Blue Bell Creameries, and Windstream Communications. The city is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area of more than one million people.

Culture and community. Rooster Days is Oklahoma's longest-running festival, dating back more than 90 years (the 94th annual event ran in 2025), with a parade, carnival, and live music. The Pride of Broken Arrow marching band is a competitive powerhouse, claiming 21 consecutive Oklahoma Bandmasters Association state championships and 30 overall; the school band program dates to 1929. Actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth grew up in Broken Arrow, and the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center houses a theatre named in her honor. The city's music and sports pedigree includes Hall of Fame pitcher Warren Spahn, who lived in Broken Arrow, and MLB pitchers Brad Penny and Archie Bradley.

What makes Broken Arrow distinct. The city's name is a direct English translation of the Muscogee (Creek) word 'Rekackv.' Broken Arrow native Ernest Childers was a World War II Medal of Honor recipient. Despite being a large city today, it began as a railroad town-site sold off in 1902. Author P.C. Cast, who wrote the 'House of Night' series, is a Broken Arrow notable.
