Brookfield is Waukesha County's affluent western Milwaukee suburb, a onetime farming township that became a retail and corporate anchor for the metro area. It is home to Fortune 500 fintech giant Fiserv and two major shopping destinations, and it sits astride a subcontinental divide that splits rainfall between the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. The city balances upscale town-center commerce with parks, bike paths, and a lingering rural heritage.

About Brookfield
Also known as. Brookfield Junction (historic railroad-era name for the settlement core). "Minutes from Milwaukee, Miles from Expected" (city slogan).
History. Area was originally inhabited by the Potawatomi; the first white settler, William Howe, arrived in 1820 with a Presidential Land Grant to the land. Robert Curren bought a claim in 1836 and established a tavern and inn; the Wisconsin legislature organized the Town of Brookfield in 1839, then part of Milwaukee County (Waukesha County was not created until 1846). Caroline Quiner was born on a Brookfield farm in 1839; she grew up to marry Charles Ingalls and become the mother of author Laura Ingalls Wilder. Cholera epidemics struck the town in 1849-1850; Brookfield Junction took shape in 1853 with the arrival of a railroad depot. The first suburban subdivision, Kinsey's Garvendale, was platted in 1928, just before the Great Depression slowed residential growth.
Local economy. Fiserv, a Fortune 500 financial-services technology company, is headquartered in Brookfield. FedEx operated its SmartPost business unit in the city. The Corners of Brookfield, a 750,000-square-foot open-air town center built over a covered parking structure, opened in 2017 with 235 luxury apartments. The Corners is anchored by Von Maur (the department store chain's first Wisconsin location, opened April 8, 2017) and a Sendik's Food Market.
Culture and community. Brookfield Days is held annually in June at Wirth Park. The Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts, in Mitchell Park, is the city's concert hall and performing-arts venue. Fox Brook Park features the city's main swimming beach, and extensive off-road bike paths run throughout the city.
What makes Brookfield distinct. A subcontinental divide runs through Brookfield, its crest near Calhoun Road and Capitol Drive; water east of it flows to Lake Michigan and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, while water west of it drains to the Fox River, the Mississippi, and the Gulf of Mexico. Al Capone reportedly operated a distillery on Brookfield Road during Prohibition, near where Capone Court sits today. Notable residents include 2020 Olympic marathon bronze medalist Molly Seidel, Pro Football Hall of Fame tackle Joe Thomas, and Baseball Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews. The city's rural roots are so recent that its first subdivision dates only to 1928.
