History. Pioneers began settling the area in 1852 after the land was opened to settlement, and Brooklyn Township organized its town government on May 11, 1858. Settlers from Michigan named the community after their hometown of Brooklyn, Michigan, which had in turn been named after Brooklyn, New York. In 1911 Brooklyn Township split, and the southeast portion incorporated separately as Brooklyn Center. The area incorporated as the Village of Brooklyn Park in 1954 and became a city in 1969. Future Minnesota governor and pro wrestler Jesse Ventura served as mayor of Brooklyn Park from 1991 to 1995. In 2025 the city was a site of the Minnesota lawmaker shootings, in which State Representative and House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed.

Local economy. Manufacturing is the largest employment sector, followed by healthcare and social assistance and retail trade. Target Corporation operates its Northern Campus at 7000 Target Parkway, on more than 300 acres of company-owned land. The economy evolved from potato and vegetable farming into industrial parks and suburban development. Sixth-largest city in Minnesota by population, with about 86,000 residents in 2020.
