Bullhead City stretches along the east bank of the Colorado River in Mohave County, directly across the water from the casino town of Laughlin, Nevada. Born from the 1940s-50s construction of Davis Dam and named for a bull's-head-shaped rock now submerged beneath Lake Mohave, the city thrives on river recreation and casino-driven employment. It is a snowbird magnet in winter and one of the hottest cities in the nation in summer.

About Bullhead City
Also known as. Arizona's West Coast.
History. The Colorado River Valley's earliest inhabitants were the Mojave (Pipa Aha Macav, 'People by the River'); Spanish explorer Melchor Diaz documented the area in 1540. In 1864 the site was Hardyville, a river settlement founded by New York entrepreneur William Harrison Hardy, who ran a Colorado River ferry and steamboat landing and was among Arizona's richest men. Hardyville faded into a ghost town after railroads bypassed the river, then was revived as a construction camp during the building of Davis Dam (1942-1953). The city took its name from a bull's-head-shaped rock formation in the river; the rock was submerged when Davis Dam impounded Lake Mohave in the 1950s. The communities of Bullhead City, Riviera, and Holiday Shores voted to incorporate in 1984.
Local economy. Tourism dominates the economy, centered on Colorado River and Lake Mohave water recreation. The casinos and resorts of Laughlin, Nevada, directly across the river, supply much of Bullhead City's employment. Leading industries include accommodation and food services, arts/entertainment/recreation, and retail trade. Winter 'snowbirds' from colder states pour in by the thousands in RVs for the mild desert winters, boosting seasonal commerce.
Culture and community. Water recreation, boating, and fishing on Lake Mohave and the Colorado River are the core of local leisure life. The annual summer River Regatta floods the Colorado with tubers; the 2016 event drew 30,158 registered participants and an estimated $20 million local economic impact. The Bullhead River Run / Mayhem Motorcycle Rally stepped in after the famed Laughlin River Run ended, drawing bikers to the area each spring. The city's identity is tied to river-and-casino tourism straddling the Arizona-Nevada line.
What makes Bullhead City distinct. It is regularly one of the hottest cities in the U.S.; the record high is about 126 degrees F, and the area recorded 125 degrees F on June 20, 2017, with roughly 185 days a year reaching 90 degrees F. The 'bull's head' rock the city is named for has been almost entirely underwater since Lake Mohave filled in the 1950s. It sits directly across the river from Laughlin, Nevada; because Arizona does not observe daylight saving time, the two neighboring towns are in different clock times for part of the year. The nickname 'Arizona's West Coast' comes from its riverfront position near the Arizona-California-Nevada tri-state juncture.
