History. Settled in 1871, platted in 1872, and incorporated as a city in 1877; it was originally called Clam Lake. Renamed Cadillac after Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, the French colonist who founded Detroit in 1701. Founded by banker and railroad entrepreneur George A. Mitchell and carpenter Adam Gallinger. The 'Battle of Manton' (1882) was an armed dispute between Cadillac and Manton residents over which town would hold the county seat records. Logger Ephraim Shay perfected his geared Shay locomotive for the logging industry here in the late 1870s; the design was later mass-produced by Lima Locomotive Works. On October 9, 1975, the rock band KISS marched with the Cadillac High football team and played a homecoming concert in the school gym, receiving a key to the city before leaving by helicopter. Cadillac's Christmas tree was chosen for the U.S. Capitol lawn in 1988.
Local economy. Manufacturing is the backbone, employing about 30% of the workforce, including pleasure boats, automotive parts, water-well components, vacuum cleaners and rubber products.
