History. Named 'Caledonia,' the ancient Latin name for Scotland, reflecting the Scottish heritage of early settlers. In 1839 Alexander McArthur discovered coal on his land on the bank of Coal Creek, in the southeast quarter of Section 22 -- the McArthur Mining Company site is recognized as Michigan's first coal mine. Early on, coal was hauled by wagon and sold mostly to blacksmiths who came from long distances, at about ten cents per bushel; organized commercial mining came decades later. The first coal shaft was opened about two miles east of Corunna and worked for five years; a second shaft was sunk in 1881 on the Kerby farm and mined for ten years, followed by a third. The Owosso Coal Company formed about 1895 (R. E. & C. P. Travis) and bought a small mine near Kerby. Corunna, the city the township surrounds, was platted in 1837, made the Shiawassee County seat in 1840, incorporated as a village in 1858, and became a city in 1869. The unincorporated community of Kerby was named for early settler Samuel W. Kerby.

Local economy. Historically defined by coal mining in the 19th and early 20th centuries -- an unusual industry for lower Michigan. Today primarily rural and agricultural, functioning as a bedroom community for Owosso and Corunna.
