Carson City is a small city of about 1,120 people in southeastern Montcalm County, strung along M-57 (Main Street) beside Fish Creek. Platted in 1866, it was named by pioneer Thomas Scott after Carson City, Nevada, where he had lived during the silver-and-gold boom. Its modern economy leans on a community hospital and a nearby state prison, and it throws one of mid-Michigan's longest-running festivals, Frontier Days.

About Carson City
History. Platted in 1866 on land owned by R. M. Abbott, Delia Miner, and Hiram T. Sherman; the first lot sold in 1867 to Thomas Scott and his nephews John and Thomas LaDue. Under the name Scott & LaDue, the founders built a sawmill in 1868 and a grist mill in 1870, anchoring the early economy. The post office was transferred from North Shade in Gratiot County on August 3, 1868, with Hiram T. Sherman as first postmaster. Incorporated as a village in 1887 and as a city in 1960, with John T. Hallett serving as the first mayor. Named after Carson City, Nevada, by Thomas Scott, who had been there during the mining boom days.
Local economy. Early industry centered on sawmilling and grain (grist) milling. UM Health / Sparrow Carson Hospital is a major local employer, ranking among Montcalm County's top 10 employers with roughly 300 employees. The Carson City Correctional Facility, a state prison opened in 1989 just outside town, is a significant area employer. Surrounded by Montcalm County farmland, the city also serves the agricultural community along the M-57 corridor.
Culture and community. Carson City-Crystal Area Schools teams are the Eagles. Carson City Frontier Days, first held in 1972, is the signature festival, celebrated the first weekend in June with rodeos, tractor pulls, canoe races, a carnival, parades, and pageants. The town's Western-flavored identity ties back to its Nevada namesake and the Frontier Days theme.
What makes Carson City distinct. A Michigan farm town named after a Nevada mining capital, courtesy of founder Thomas Scott's frontier travels. Actor and model Daniel Henney was born here in 1979 and was a standout basketball player at Carson City-Crystal High School before his film and TV career. Poet Bill Knott (1940-2014), who briefly published under the pen name "Saint Giraud," was born in Carson City. Major League Baseball player Orson Baldwin (1881-1942) was also a Carson City native. Its Frontier Days festival has run since 1972, making it one of mid-Michigan's longest-running community celebrations.
