History. The community of Cascade was platted in 1845 by D. S. T. Weller and had a post office from 1854 to 1910. Originally part of Ada Township, Cascade sought separation and held its first township meeting on April 3, 1848, at Ezra Whitney's Public House, with Peter Teeple elected first supervisor. Lewis Cook, a New Jersey native, is recorded as the first settler, arriving in 1836, followed by Irish immigrant pioneers in 1837 and 1838. The first general store and post office were built in 1854. A township hall built in 1890 still stands and now serves as the Township Museum. Kent County began building the present airport in 1959; it opened November 23, 1963, and was dedicated June 6, 1964, later named for President Gerald R. Ford.
Local economy. Home to Gerald R. Ford International Airport, the region's largest airport, occupying about 4.89 square miles of the township's southwest.
