About Catonsville

History. The area was first settled around 1720 near a roadside inn known as Johnnycake, a name said to come from the cornbread served to travelers along Frederick Road. The community was named for Richard Caton, an English merchant who married Mary 'Polly' Carroll, daughter of Charles Carroll of Carrollton; first called 'Catonville,' the spelling changed to 'Catonsville' in the 1830s. On May 17, 1968, the Catonsville Nine, including brothers Daniel and Philip Berrigan, removed 378 draft files from the local Selective Service office and burned them with homemade napalm in the parking lot, a landmark Vietnam War protest.

Local economy. The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), a public research university on a roughly 500-acre campus (1000 Hilltop Circle), is located mostly within Catonsville and is a major local employer. Charlestown, one of the largest continuing care retirement communities in the United States and operated by Erickson Senior Living, is in Catonsville and employs a large local workforce.

Culture and community. The State of Maryland officially named Catonsville 'Music City, Maryland' in 2002, reflecting its concentration of music stores, instrument makers, and live-music venues. Frederick Road, part of the historic National Road, forms the town's main street and is lined with restaurants, shops, and music stores. The Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) operates its Catonsville campus there, the former Catonsville Community College.
