History. Osgood Shepherd, reputedly an outlaw, built the first cabin at the site around 1837 or 1838 beside the Cedar River. George Greene, Nicholas Brown, and partners bought out Shepherd's claim in 1841 and platted a town first called Rapids City. The settlement was renamed Cedar Rapids after the Cedar River in 1848 and incorporated as a city in 1849. Czech immigrants fleeing the 1848 revolutions arrived in large numbers; by the 1856 reincorporation about a quarter of the roughly 1,600 residents were Czech. In 2008 the Cedar River crested at a record 31.12 feet, flooding over 1,100 city blocks and forcing thousands of evacuations.
