History. Robin Hicks settled the area in 1855; a post office opened February 4, 1857, and the community was platted in 1859. Founded as a lumber town, Cedar Springs had numerous lumber and shingle mills; the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad arrived in 1868. Incorporated as a village in 1871 and as a city in 1959. Local makers produced red flannel undergarments for loggers who worked outdoors through brutal winters, an industry that outlasted the lumber era. In the winter of 1936, a New York Sun writer hunting for old-fashioned red flannel underwear was told by Saks Fifth Avenue that none existed; Cedar Springs wired back that it still made them, sparking the town's red-flannel fame. The first Red Flannel Festival was held in November 1939.
Local economy. Rooted historically in lumber and shingle milling, then in red flannel garment making.
