Charlottesville is a central Virginia college city in the Blue Ridge foothills, defined by Thomas Jefferson's twin legacies: his mountaintop home Monticello and the University of Virginia he founded, which together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It blends a lively brick-paved pedestrian Downtown Mall, a nationally known food-and-wine scene, and a deep presidential history. It is also the birthplace of the Dave Matthews Band.

About Charlottesville
Also known as. C'ville. Hoo-Ville.
History. Established in 1762 by an act of the Virginia Assembly and named for Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of King George III. Home to U.S. Presidents Thomas Jefferson (Monticello) and James Monroe (Highland), with Jefferson designing both Monticello and the University of Virginia. Jefferson founded the University of Virginia and designed its Academical Village and Rotunda, modeled on the Pantheon, with construction of the Lawn in 1817-1826. In 1965 the predominantly African American Vinegar Hill neighborhood was razed under an urban-renewal program. In August 2017 the white-supremacist Unite the Right rally over a Confederate statue turned deadly when a car attack killed counter-protester Heather Heyer. On July 10, 2021 the city removed its Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson statues.
Local economy. The University of Virginia and its health system are by far the largest employers, each with well over 1,000 workers, plus the city and school system. Consumer-electronics retailer Crutchfield is headquartered in the area. Other major employers include S&P Global, PepsiCo and Emerson Automation Solutions. Wine tourism is a significant industry, with more than 40 wineries within about a 30-mile radius. The 2024 unemployment rate ran around 3.1%, reflecting a stable university-anchored economy.
Culture and community. Birthplace and home base of the Dave Matthews Band, with a strong ongoing indie and roots music scene. The free Fridays After Five concert series runs spring through summer at the downtown Ting Pavilion. Major annual events include the Virginia Festival of the Book (March), the Virginia Film Festival (October), and Charlottesville Pride (September). A dense downtown dining scene of roughly 30 restaurants plus breweries like Three Notch'd and Champion, and local cideries and distilleries. Sports revolve around the UVA Cavaliers, who won the 2019 NCAA men's basketball national championship.
What makes Charlottesville distinct. UVA students and teams are called 'Wahoos' or 'Hoos,' a nickname tracing to an 1890s rivalry with Washington & Lee. The city was named after a German-born British queen, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The Downtown Mall is one of the earliest and most successful pedestrian malls built in the United States. In June 2025 Charlottesville used ranked-choice voting for the first time in a Democratic primary. It is one of Virginia's most Democratic-leaning cities; Joe Biden won about 85% of the vote there in 2020.
