Web Design for Chelsea, Massachusetts

Chelsea is the smallest city in Massachusetts by land area and one of the most densely populated, a working waterfront just across the Mystic River from Boston that has absorbed wave after wave of immigrants. Once called 'the Jerusalem of America' for its enormous Jewish community and twice nearly leveled by catastrophic fires, it is today a majority-Latino, heavily Salvadoran city and a food-distribution engine that helps feed much of New England.

AppWT works with Chelsea, MA businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Chelsea

Also known as. The Jerusalem of America / Little Jerusalem (early 20th century, for its large Jewish community). The smallest city in Massachusetts by land area (about 2.47 square miles).

History. First settled by Europeans in 1624 by Samuel Maverick in an area the Massachusett people called Winnisimmet, believed to mean 'swamp hill'; it was part of Boston before incorporating as a town in 1739 and as a city on April 28, 1857. The Battle of Chelsea Creek in 1775 is often called the second battle of the American Revolution. The Great Chelsea Fire of April 12, 1908 destroyed nearly half the city and left roughly 18,000 people, about 56% of the population, homeless. A second Great Chelsea Fire in 1973 destroyed about 18 city blocks and affected nearly one-fifth of the city. A fiscal crisis put Chelsea under state receivership from 1991 to 1995, the first Massachusetts community placed in receivership in decades.

Local economy. The New England Produce Center, built in Chelsea in 1968 to replace Faneuil Hall's produce role, is the region's largest wholesale produce market and one of the largest privately owned terminal markets in the country, employing over a thousand people. Historic industries included shipbuilding, boots and shoes, rubber and elastic goods, stoves, adhesives and metalworks; the Chelsea Clock Company operated in the city until 2015. Top employers include the City of Chelsea, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, and the Massachusetts Information Technology Center. Petroleum tank farms and terminals line the Chelsea River (Chelsea Creek), a key regional fuel-distribution point.

Culture and community. As of 2020 about 65.8% of residents identified as Hispanic/Latino and roughly 46% were foreign-born, the highest foreign-born share of any city in Massachusetts; the largest groups are Salvadoran, Puerto Rican and Honduran. A dense cluster of Salvadoran pupuserias and Central American restaurants (such as El Santaneco, Rancho Las Pupusas and Delicias Salvadorenas) defines the food scene. La Colaborativa, founded in 1988 as the Chelsea Collaborative and renamed in 2020, is a Latina-led nonprofit central to the city's immigrant and civic life. Earlier waves made Chelsea the largest Jewish community in Massachusetts outside Boston by World War I; notable natives include jazz musician Chick Corea and heavyweight boxing champion John Ruiz.

What makes Chelsea distinct. At about 2.47 square miles it is the smallest city in Massachusetts by land area and among the most densely populated. The city was nearly destroyed by fire not once but twice, in 1908 and again in 1973. A large share of the fresh produce eaten across New England and the Canadian Maritimes moves through the New England Produce Center in Chelsea. Petroleum tank farms along Chelsea Creek supply jet fuel to Logan Airport and much of the region's gasoline and heating oil. Notorious figure Albert DeSalvo, the confessed Boston Strangler, was born in Chelsea.
