About Cherry Hill

History. Incorporated as Delaware Township on March 13, 1844, becoming part of the newly organized Camden County. Residents voted 5,201 to 3,700 on November 7, 1961 to rename the township, which officially became Cherry Hill Township on December 6, 1961; the name came from the Cherry Hill farm and the Cherry Hill Inn, since Delaware Township conflicted with another New Jersey postal name. Garden State Park racetrack opened July 18, 1942, built by developer Eugene Mori during World War II rationing, and operated until it closed on May 3, 2001.

Local economy. Subaru of America based its U.S. headquarters in a seven-story building on Route 70 in Cherry Hill from 1986 until relocating to Camden in 2018. The Cherry Hill Mall, one of the first enclosed shopping malls on the East Coast, opened in 1961 and remains a major regional retail anchor.

Culture and community. Barclay Farmstead, built in 1816 by Quaker farmer Joseph Thorn, is a township-owned historic house museum listed on the National and New Jersey Registers of Historic Places. The former Garden State Park racetrack site was redeveloped into a mixed-use town center of stores, restaurants, apartments and townhouses after 2001. The Latin Casino nightclub operated in Cherry Hill and drew major performers including Rat Pack entertainers during the 1960s and 1970s.

What makes Cherry Hill distinct. The township is one of the few U.S. municipalities effectively named after a shopping mall, adopting the Cherry Hill name around the time the Cherry Hill Mall opened in 1961. Its police department was known as the Delaware Township Police until the 1961 name change to Cherry Hill. The town shifted from a rural farming community of about 10,000 people to a suburb of over 70,000 within a few decades of the mall opening.
