History. Chocolay Township was carved out of Marquette Township in March 1860 and became a charter township on May 16, 1972. It entered the iron-ore story in 1860 when Charles T. Harvey -- builder of the Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie -- directed construction of a charcoal blast furnace at the mouth of the Chocolay River. That first furnace made only about 600 gross tons of iron during a run of roughly six weeks before its charcoal supply ran out. Harvey platted the Village of Harvey in 1864, hoping to dredge a harbor and build a townsite that could rival Marquette. Homesteaders and farmers settled the watershed beginning in the 1860s, including English, French, German, and Scandinavian families.
Local economy. Now primarily a residential and commuter township adjacent to the city of Marquette. Its 19th-century economy rested on the charcoal iron furnace and the sawmills built to supply it. Lake Superior shoreline recreation and tourism draw visitors along the M-28 corridor. The township spans about 60.8 square miles of eastern Marquette County.
Culture and community. Strong Upper Peninsula ethnic heritage; 2000 census ancestry was led by Finnish (about 12.7%), German, and French roots. Lakenenland sculpture park is a signature cultural landmark and free roadside attraction. Community life centers on the census-designated place of Harvey and Lake Superior beach access.
