History. A New York squatter named Linus (Linux) Jacox built the first house/shanty in the area around 1830; Butler Holcomb built the second house and a sawmill in 1832. The Independence post office was transferred to the community on December 12, 1840. In 1842 brothers Jeremiah and Nelson Clark platted the village and gave it the name Clarkston. Incorporated as a village in 1884 and re-incorporated as a city in 1992, keeping the legal name 'City of the Village of Clarkston.' The Clarkston Village Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
