Web Design for Clifton, New Jersey

Clifton is a densely built, ethnically diverse city in Passaic County and one of New Jersey's largest municipalities, hugging the cliffs of Garrett Mountain from which it takes its name. A former farm town turned industrial hub and New York City bedroom suburb, it is known statewide for its deep-fried 'Ripper' hot dogs and its blue-collar, multicultural character.

AppWT works with Clifton, NJ businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Clifton

Also known as. The City That Cares (official municipal motto). Named for the cliffs of Garrett Mountain that border its Albion Place neighborhood.

History. European settlement traces to a 1679 deed in which a Lenape representative granted Hans Frederick roughly 11,000 acres along the Passaic River; Dutch and later English farmers followed. Incorporated as a city by the New Jersey Legislature on April 26, 1917, formed out of the former Acquackanonk Township. The name derives from the cliffs of Garrett Mountain on the city's western edge. The Morris Canal, built through the area in the 1830s, moved coal and goods and helped turn the farming community into a 19th-century industrial center. The U.S. Department of Agriculture operated a U.S. Animal Quarantine Station in Clifton beginning in 1903.

Local economy. One of New Jersey's most populous municipalities (90,296 residents at the 2020 Census, ranking 11th in the state). A regional commercial hub for North Jersey and a commuter suburb of New York City, criss-crossed by major highways including Route 3, Route 21, and the Garden State Parkway. A mixed economy of retail, manufacturing, and service industries reflecting the city's economic and cultural diversity. Comodo Cybersecurity has maintained a headquarters presence in Clifton.

Culture and community. Rutt's Hut, opened in 1928, is a nationally famous deep-fried hot dog institution. The Hot Grill, opened October 13, 1961, is a Passaic County landmark for Texas wieners ordered 'all the way.' The Northern NJ Empanada Festival is among the food festivals held in the city. Clifton is the childhood home of David Chase, creator of HBO's 'The Sopranos,' who grew up in a Clifton garden apartment. Boxer Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter, subject of the Bob Dylan song 'Hurricane' and the film 'The Hurricane,' was born in Clifton in 1937.

What makes Clifton distinct. Rutt's fried hot dogs are nicknamed 'Rippers' because the frying causes the casings to crack and split; the shop has been named the nation's #1 hot dog by The Daily Meal. Rutt's serves a proprietary relish of pickle relish, mustard, and cabbage that tastes lightly like sauerkraut. Clifton High School was cited as the largest single-facility high school in New Jersey, with more than 3,300 students enrolled in 2006. The city has served as a filming location for productions including 'Donnie Brasco' and 'The Sopranos.' Actors Nina Arianda, Jon Seda, and soccer player Matt Miazga also come from Clifton.
