History. The area's first sawmill was built in the late 1830s (accounts cite Theodore Dean in 1838), taking advantage of Michigan's timber stands. Originally called Varna (some local histories say Varney, for an early industrialist who ran a grain elevator); the name was changed to Clio, the muse of history, in the mid-1860s after the railroad arrived. The Flint & Pere Marquette railroad reached the settlement around 1861, turning Clio into a supply and shipping point for area farmers as the timber ran out. Platted and organized as a village in 1873; the Clio Fire Department was established in 1881 and the Clio State Bank in 1885. Incorporated as a city in 1928. Clio lies entirely within Vienna Township but is administratively independent of it.
Local economy. A farming and timber-shipping outpost in the 19th century, Clio's fortunes shifted in the early 20th century toward Flint's booming automobile industry, from which it draws its 'Auto City' associations. Local trade, small manufacturing and services tied to the Flint metro economy support the community. The city connected to the Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline, beginning to receive water from that system on November 27, 2017. With a 2020 census population of 2,525, Clio functions largely as a residential and small-commercial community within commuting range of Flint.
Culture and community. The Clio Amphitheater (opened 1987) is an outdoor concert venue that has hosted major touring acts over the decades. Auto City Speedway, a stock-car track opened in 1955, runs paved half-mile, quarter-mile and figure-8 racing on summer Saturday nights and hosts rodeos and demolition derbies. Community theater is anchored by Clio Cast & Crew, which grew out of the Clio Players founded in 1977. The city's park system, including a City Park dedicated in 1939 along a Pine Run tributary, hosts community gatherings.
